HCB Review # 10 - The Grumpy Baker
HCB Review #10 - The Grumpy Baker (various locations) 6 for less than $14 (that needs explanation)
Rating 4/5
This is definitely no grumpiness in the Grumpy Baker. There is a very funny story with this HCB that I need to share. I had read about these HCB's nearly 2 years ago here and tried many times to get there. Once I was TOO EARLY to pick them up, once I was too late. But when I recently had to get home from Tempe I thought that I could definitely pass through their Marrickville store and pick up some.
So I rang first, to make sure that a) they were making HCBs already and b) that there were some left. They were indeed making them and though they didn't have any right now, there were about to bake some so I could come by in 20 minutes and pick them up. FRESHLY BAKED HCBS!! Get out of my way!!
I arrived at their very non-descriptive store and found out that the buns hadn't made it in the oven and so I would have to wait 20 minutes. Hmmm... I need to do the school run in approximately 40 minutes time, should I wait? Yes. The promise of HCBs was too much. So I waited. Little George was with me so we had babycinos, croissant (because he hasn't got a sweet tooth - how is he my child?) and hot chocolates. Then he needed to go to the toilet. The not-at-all-grumpy staff were so kind to let us use the staff toilet AND get a little look in the bakery as well. It was fun!
Then finally, with 20 minutes to drive 20 minutes to school, I not only got my 6 FRESHLY BAKED HCBs but also ended up with a few extra (lets say a Baker's dozen) and so with my 6++ buns, plus drinks I paid $14 so not exactly sure the cost.
And what were they like?
They were amazing! Soft, but not too soft. Very tasty. Look great. Had a nice bit of glaze. Good crosses. I know some of you will say I am bias because I just had them fresh out of the oven. This is true. But I also had spares, which The Man and I and the Magic Music Woman (my amazing neighbour) progressively ate over the week. And I can confirm that they still taste good after a few days. I didn't give them a 5 because, well, 5 is very hard to get. And I reserve the score of 5 for those that you should seriously race across town to get. I don't think these are quite there yet. But, with a variety of locations, if you are near one, I highly recommend you drop in and get some. Thank you (not-so) Grumpy Baker!!!
