2017 reviews - to no. 10 and beyond! (to 12 anyways...)
Review #10 - So good to go - Bowan Island. $10 for 6. Score 4
Bowan Island hot cross buns are highly favoured by most foodie news outlets and I know why. They taste great. They have lots of fruit and a bit of spice and taste amazing toasted and warm, especially when served in a cafe. Like I am sure most HCBs would. This year I have bought them in a 6 pack as I am surprised that their price has come down but their fruit nor taste hasn't. Their crosses have also increased making this a very acceptable bun. This could be one you can impress foodie friends with when you rock up to the Easter long weekend catch up. At the price it doesn't hurt too much.
Note: these are cheaper at Harris Farm than at the actual bakery.
Review #11 - Good to look at - Organic Village Bakery. 6 for $10. Score 2.
This local alternative to Bowen Island (known by locals as Pho-wen island) usually has a pretty good HCB to battle their competition up the road. But not this year. I didn't want to be blinded by the fact that I was able to receive these straight out of the oven. They smelt amazing as I walked home with them. To ensure no bias behaviour, I bought two. One for that morning (coz I wasn't going to let a fresh HCB go to waste) and one for the next day, to allow it to be sampled in similar test conditions to other HCBs. What looked amazing and smelt amazing sadly didn't taste amazing. The bottoms were tough and a bit chewy. There wasn't much spice. And they didn't reheat well the next day. I'm sad to see a previously high scoring bun fall down the rankings.
Review #12 - Will keep you going - Coco Noir. $3.50 for one. Score 3.
I had a spare 30 minutes between two meetings and walked past Coco Noir (a chain of cafes) and saw these HCBs. With a nice cup of hot chocolate on a cool but sunny autumn day, this seemed like a perfect morning tea. It was. The bun was warm (it had been toasted) and it looked very nice an attractive. For $3.50 you would want it to be warm, attractive and nice. It wasn't AMAZING though and sadly you cannot buy a set of these to take home. And I acknowledge that the test conditions were not very similar to other HCBs. This has been taken into account with the score. But it was definitely good HCB to keep you going and push you along to the next meeting. (plus the cafe setting was very nice, with comfy chairs and pretty lights).
